Developing Icons

For my final design I decided to use a mix of icons over a stylized map. I found my initial refined ideas were very rigid, and quite boring, despite being completely accurate in terms of the map being displayed true to life. This allowed me to realise that accuracy was less important than key travel moments on the map, and an aesthetic appealing visual. I collected a list of points of interest around Great Malvern, then created new icons that corresponded to the appropriate place on the map. I wanted them to be symmetrical to each other and geometrically correct. By applying different colours to these icons, they will be easier to identify on the map. I continued to use any muted shades, apart from green which would form the base of my map. I also made sure that the shade chosen for each pictogram was a contrasting colour shade so that they would stand out and pop on the map. ...

Map Refinement

With all the icons and elements I had created my final part of the design process was to refine my map background. I incorporated feedback from my peers and created my first version of my E-bike route map. I used a simplified version of the road layout, which incorporated the most important landmarks needed to follow the route and find the tourist attractions and cafes. Creating a stylized map as opposed to a realistic map, was far more enjoyable to work on and allowed me to use my intuition. Exactly as Harry Beck did with his Tube Map, I could bend reality to the point where I could exaggerate distances, or create the sense of an urban environment by adding a few buildings, something I could not achieve with a realistic map to scale. Map Elements and Typography

I had to create all map elements so I began by using very simple shapes to build up a tree. I created a deciduous tree and an evergreen tree to further emphasise the leafy green landscapes of Great Malvern. It was an important consideration for me to always make Great Malvern look inviting and 'green' so that the underlying theme of the brief, that of environmental awareness, was subtly expressed to the viewer. I created four different trees to rotate in various sizes over the map. I enjoyed the freestyle aspect of the tree and building design part, as I could be a bit more creative and not conform to the grid compared to when I was making the icons. Below, are examples of the trees, park equipment and buildings. I also designed a compass, which did not end up in my final design following vital feedback. For the typography I wanted to use a Modern Looking Sans Serif, so I arranged some for comparison. ...
